Brew-fortified mango float: Good taste, great pairings with San Miguel Lifestyle Brews

Ingredients
Saturday.

This is my day, my creative day where I feel good and innovative.

Feeling accomplished and fulfilled for unknown reasons, I decided to do something new, something creative for my self and for my friends.

Celebration. That’s what I called the day.
San Miguel Super Dry
San Miguel Premium All-Malt
San Miguel Cerveza Negra

Unwittingly, I found myself inside the supermarket, buying several bottles of San Miguel Lifestyle Brews, or the San Miguel Premium All-Malt, San Miguel Super Dry and Cerveza Negra, a kilo of fresh mango, big packs of Graham crackers and crushed, a can of fruit cocktail, cans of Alaska condensed and evaporated milk, and packs of Nestle cream and all-purpose-cream.

Excitedly, when I got home, I just unloaded the goods onto the table. Surprisingly, I realized that what I bought were all mango float ingredients. What about the bottles of beer? I silently asked to my self. I never drink. I just love to eat the float.

And that’s where anxiety ended.

After blending the milk with the cream, I put a tablespoonful of Cerveza Negra into the mixture. And I learned the aroma became strong and great. Its delicate smell indeed enveloped the kitchen. It’s a form of experiment and it did great. I succeeded.

I began to assemble by layering all the ingredients into a container. And topping it with Del Monte Fruit Cocktail. Refrigerated it for hours.

I labeled the innovation as ‘Mango Float fortified with San Miguel Brew’.

At around 3 p.m., my close friends started to arrive. It’s Rex first. Then Berto and Jimbo. Followed by Joy and Victor. Tiwi was the last to come. He brought along with him his other friend Vincent.

When all were in, we snaked out of the house and proceeded to the beach where the family-owned ‘Bahay Kubo” located. We positioned ourselves then.

I served each of them with a slice of mango float. Then, I introduced the San Miguel Lifestyle Brews. They were all eager to take a try. I let them pick what they wanted for a beer. Rex and Berto chose the San Miguel Premium All-Malt; Jimbo, Tiwi and Vincent, and Joy grabbed the Super Dry; while Victor and I selected the Cerveza Negra. Though I don’t usually drink, I got the Cerveza Negra for myself. I tried and I love it then. I also tried the Premium and the Super Dry and they all taste great. I love the trio. Really.

Exactly twenty minutes passed, all demanded for another slice of float. I served. An hour after, they still all insisted for another round of beer. They obviously love the beer. As usual, I served again. The situation repeated for five times till the refrigerator ran out of loads.

We all enjoyed the wonderful moment of eating the float and drinking the brews in the beach. Through out the breezy air and the rare beauty of the sunset, my friends frequently acknowledged the unique taste of mango float fortified with Cerveza Negra. It flavored great.  The brews, the ‘San Miguel’s finest, the internationally-recognized, the award-winning’ Premium All-Malt, Super Dry and the Cerveza Negra, all savored great too. The brew paired with mango float is the perfectly unique match for a bonding moment with ‘barkadas’.

The exceptional pairing of mango float and the brews magically styled up our day: it offered us a unique feeling of total satisfaction, enjoyment, closeness and experience ‘above the ordinary’… with a pride.

We just love doing it again and again. Almost every week. Till we have become virtually inseparable.

As we drink more and longer, we all feel great, cool and relaxed, and that our camaraderie seemingly becomes better, closer and stronger.

Brew drinking is a truly bonding moment, indeed./*

The resort complex lies on an area of 3,000 square meters, fully-landscaped and surrounded by cabanas and gazebos.

The 1,062 square meter swimming pool was artistically designed with the floating island to accommodate all ages and pool enthusiasts. An infinity edge serves as the junction between the main pool and the 25-meter lap pool area. This is through a cascading waterfall feature towards the  lap pool. It has two diving boards.

The pool is the region’s largest.

“It’s More Fun in the Philippines” on target for 2012, hits 1.148M tourist arrivals in Q1

Visitor arrivals to the Philippines hit an all-time high of 1,148,072 during the first three months of the year (January-March 2012), posting an increase of 16.03% versus last year’s arrivals of 989,501 for the same period.

“During this period, visitors to the Philippines increased by 16 percent to hit almost 1.15 million. From this record, we have now achieved 25 percent of our international visitor target of 4.6 million for this year,” Tourism Secretary Ramon R. Jimenez, Jr. said.

“The world is now starting to see that ‘It’s More Fun in the Philippines’ is not just a bunch of words on a streamer.  It is a competitive argument for choosing the Philippines as one of the world’s top tourist destinations.  Philippine tourism is poised to surge forward as we receive a steady increase of tourist arrivals, as seen in the first quarter of this year,” beamed Secretary Jimenez.

This strong tourism outlook was recently highlighted during the 45th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in the Philippines when the Department of Tourism (DOT) convened foreign and local delegates in a forum on “Harnessing the Growth Potentials of Tourism” at the SMX Convention Center to showcase the developments and investment opportunities in the country’s tourism industry.

In that tourism forum, Tourism Undersecretary Daniel G. Corpuz presented the recently completed National Tourism Development Plan (NTDP) highlighting the country’s growth potentials and investment opportunities available to the private sector, investors, bankers, fund managers and local government units.  The NTDP is a product of the most thorough inventory of tourist attractions in the history of the Philippines. It divides the county into 20 clusters and identifies the key gateways that will be the focus of massive development in the next four years.

“This forum is just the beginning of various road shows to inform partners, as well as encourage investors and funding institutions to support the implementation of the NTDP. There is much more to be done to make the Philippines more fun than it is now,” Jimenez told the participants.

Still remaining as top five tourist-generating countries are Korea, USA, Japan, China, and Taiwan. The Korean market maintained its big lead over the other producers, contributing 265,031 visitors for a share of 23.08% of the total tourist arrivals during the quarter.   This is a 16.04% increase compared to last year’s arrivals of 228,398 visitors.

The US market captured 15.64% of the total arrivals or 179,561 visitors, growing at 6.35% compared to last year’s figures of 168,847 during the same period. Meanwhile, visitors from Japan numbered at 104,558 or 9.11% of the total visitors, an increase of 3.85% from last year.

The fourth and fifth biggest generating markets are China and Taiwan, which consequently got the biggest double-digit growth rates of 77.53% and 37.49% respectively, comparing to last year’s figures. China and Taiwan registered 96,455 and 57,745 visitor arrivals this year compared to last year’s figures of 54,332 and 42,000 visitors respectively.

“Our international exposure on CNN, promotional efforts in key markets, policy reforms to ease entry and enhance market access, and ongoing improvements in road and airport infrastructure will help bring in more warm bodies.  Therefore, we see no reason why we won’t hit our target of 4.6 M this year,” Secretary Jimenez added.

Other fast-growing markets include Australia with 47,651 arrivals for a share of 4.15%, Canada with 36,517 arrivals at 3.18%, Singapore with 35,975 arrivals at 3.13%, United Kingdom with 31,700 at 2.76%, Hongkong with 28,800 at 2.51%, Malaysia with 24,327 at 2.12%, and Germany with 21,106 at 1.84% share.

Overseas Filipinos contributed 4.65% to the total tourist traffic at 53,404 arrivals. This segment grew by 4.98% compared to last year’s volume of 50,871 visitors.

What sets the Philippines apart, Jimenez enthused, is that “the Philippines is about the Filipino, the Filipino and his infectious love of the things that the world tends to forget: family, friends and the communion with God’s beautiful earth.”/*

Being Laconic

In writing principle, brevity and coherence are essentially significant. Brief but concise article always takes the insight. In other word, if we can narrow down our multi-paragraph article into a single paragraph, our masterpiece would be as “perfect literature” as it could possibly be. If that one-paragraph expression of ideas can be shortened to a sentence, readers could easily seize the very essence and thought of the work.

What is left then in the article? A single sentence. But it speaks the totality of what you think. However, if we think a single word can precisely describe a sentence we write, then we should trim down the many-word sentence to a single word. Additionally, if you think that certain word can be effectively substituted by a single alphabetical letter, the language would be greatly regarded as “perfect rhetoric”.

Do you think you still need to impress your readers by having a single alphabetical letter to completely say your ideas? Not anymore? Then, don’t write at all. The logic is: don’t take anything, write an article or say a word if you think it would literally or verbally be unnecessary. It would only confuse the matter along the way. So, mute yourself off.

That’s all about the virtue of laconicity, a magical reality in the real sense. It is magical because it appraises huge value or importance for a solo but concise material. Laconic man, on the other hand, advocates a word but it says a thousand wisdoms. All kings are laconic, so are the heads of states. Their being laconic is implicitly contained in their summons, declarations, announcements and decrees. The judges and legislators are also laconic themselves. Court proceedings and trials are laconic in forms. But their resolutions and decisions are heavily long-winded and complex. That’s the baffling, grim reality.

Today, laconicity virtually applies to modern–day writing. Media or writing people must adhere to the Spartan concept of laconic. However, there are some newspapermen who still don’t observe the common rules of brevity, coherence and concision. There are some lengthy write-ups from so-called “writers” that fall prey to the basic norms. The real danger is the plain fact that these are being read by people who beyond doubt anticipate instant learning from the articles. But if we take an honest, closer look at them, their writings carry an alarming mistake. “Their stuffs can in fact be shortened or some sentences or paragraphs can be potentially omitted”.

This Spartanic approach, of course, is relatively vital. What we persuade here is the application of the principles of laconicity into writing, or even speaking. Laconicity does not in any way eliminate substance of the article. Instead, it gives a nearly perfect definition of rhetoric. Being laconic in writing is something what the people need today. In the midst of advance technology and complicated digital world, people are becoming busy who have a particular inclination to skip wordy and knotty genres, mostly relying on the convenience of the virtual reality which is comparatively synonymous to laconicity. Why still write if the readers have a propensity to rebound your hard work?

Filipino Paolo’s txt style sets trend

It is said that the Philippines is the “Text Capital” in the world. The fact reveals that the 97% of the Filipino community of all ages have possessed cellular phones called “a fashion gadget”. With this number, 90% have dramatically become “hard texters”. “Hard texters” never call but engage on sending Short Messaging System (SMS) incessantly.

According to the country’s giant service providers, the Smart Communications and the Globe Telecom, their respective networks receive millions of SMS every tick of a second. Smart alone registers about 8 million SMS every minute.

But the question is: How does Juan Dela Cruz (A Pinoy’s popular icon) send text messages (short for SMS)?

Paolo Miguel Padpad, a 15-year-old student of Negros Occidental Science High School in Victorias City, Negros Occidental, has developed and conceivably set a trend that most youngsters crave to adopt in their “text life”. Though the text style looks thorny and tricky, the words Paolo often types in his cellular phone have the artistic and creative touch that speaks of his ingenuity.

“2hrz”. That’s for 2 hours. “Pxalod” is for “pasalod”. “nYc”, nice. “pWeTty”, pretty. “fHyNe”, fine. “oKieZ”, okay. “eLoWiEz”, hello. “xUmMr”, summer. “pHwEeiZz”, please. “lHuBLyF”, lovelife. And, “lHuBLotzHh”, love lots.

Other text words include “bE bLeZzd”, “mHuAkZzH”, “eiNquEzHu”, “hOwZ”, “uRz”, “yHuP”, “waT” and “maTtrZ”.

Instead of typing “what’s the matter?”, Paolo keys in “waTz D maTtrZ?” And, how’s your life, he rather forms “hOwZ uR Lyf?”.

If we will weigh up those crafts formulated by Paolo, there is still a fine syntax in the text words.

In 1976, as a 27-year-old Ph. D. student, now Dr. Graham Rawlinson put forward the theory that skilled readers can understand text, even if the letters of the words are jumbled up. “aoccdrnig to rsceearh at an Elingsh uinervtisy, it deosn’t mttaer in what order the ltteers in a word are, the only iprmoantnt thing is that the frist and lsat lteers are at the rghit pclae. This is bcuseae we do not raed ervey lteter by itself but the word as a wlohe.”

Has Paolo’s art of texting something to do with Rawlinson’s theory?

Pinoys enjoy unlimited txt

Cn we be txtmate?" is the starting phrase of word.

"How did u get my number?" is the inquiry that follows.

"Ur name please? " is statement that has become a cliche.

Now, the unending exchanging of text messages occupies the students' day-to-day routine. From early in the morning up to the sunset till midnight, students appear oblivious of the realities. They have become the modern barbarians who feel no pain of life's struggle. They have become extremely numb.

"Nang, 60 smart e-load please", one declares upon approaches to the loading station. Then, she types TXT and sends to 258. Now, she can send unlimited text messages to "sawa". And her life becomes as colorful and as enjoyable as she is.

She texts as there is no tomorrow. She seldom takes "merienda". She sometimes fails to study her lessons. She one time skips classes. She always carries the cp with her, and looks down on it: "may message ko!" Virtually, she gains friends; she even earns enemies.

"Pasalod bi? Ubos na ang load ko." Now, the story repeats itself. And her life runs a complicated story.

"Happy ka ba?"

A truly strange party ever

Would it be highly possible for us all to hold an all-night-long party with among friendster loyalists? I mean, for us all 16 friendster advocates? It’s heavily a strange idea that invades my mind. But we can not certainly discount any possibility. So long each advocate seems fascinated of the initiative, nothing is impossible.

However, alarming problem rises. What if a member resides somewhere in the south? Or, in the north? Let’s say Dustin who lives and studies in Ilocos Norte. Almer works in Manila and sometimes in Cebu. And Enrico who migrated in the U.S., so is Josh in Italy. The rest are in Bacolod.

Time also shares the doom, not even to mention the trouble of monetary aspect. Does Dustin have enough time for the proposal? What about Enrico and Josh? Do they just buy the idea and step down the plane for such bash? Heck, only they who know the answer.

That’s adventure. Cool adventure. Great adventure. Should we share the same interest, the same hallucination, that truly strange party ever will come into reality.

WHERE IN THE PHILIPPINES SHOULD I BE ON DECEMBER 31, 1999?

MIDDLE OF VISAYAN SEA

At about 10:55 PM of December 31, 1999, a motorized boat will take the whole family of five and a few close friends to the middle of the Visayan sea engulfing the seamount village where we humbly live. This would be our ultimate venue to welcome the New Millennium while gracefully embracing the breezy air there.

The 30-minute travel from the shore ultimately brings us to the most peaceful, beautiful and pollution-free place to trigger a big bang for another century. The middle of the sea boasts off nothing but starry night with the air and wave sounds. The fireworks also stir and flare up the silent night.

The site's pacific water seemingly freshens up the people's minds and hearts, and cleanses their souls, so as the grim life is buried when the new millennium comes. It looks like there had not a bad quirk of the preceding centuries. On the sea, whatever history we had culminates. But when we get back ashore, a new chapter for a new beginning unfolds./*

RUSTIC FARM

Our humble, rustic farm will be my right choice of venue to welcome the significant New Millennium. Though it’s far from the modern amenities, the whole family still has to adventure to the village called “Kapispisan” where my conservative parents were born and lovingly raised.

Located some 35 kilometers away from the city proper, “Kapispisan” is ideal venue to observe in Filipino way the turn of a new century. Its scenic beauty literally invites us to frolic with the rustic life that Filipinos had once enjoyed. It is magnificent in nature, with singing birds and cool winds, lush vegetation, blooming flowers, fruit and forest trees, huge sugarcane, rice and corn plantations.

It’s not just to play run in the open grassfield nor to eat there a cooked “kamote kahoy” nor corn seeds, “suman” or “puto tak-tak”, but for us to feel together the real value and spirit of being a Filipino as we wait for the coming of the New Millennium. To start a new life is to trace the past, so that we can rectify the wrongdoings and see to it that they may never be repeated in the next century./*

BUSAK-BUSAK SPRING

Cadiz City has prided itself with the fame and glory the Busak-Busak spring has brought over the years. However, when the New Millennium comes, the spring will not be open for public because it is being tapped as the main source of water for the Denmark-funded Negros Water Supply and Sanitation Project (NWSSP). It will fully operate next year. This is probably the reason why my family and other close friends will trek down there on December 31, 1999 to welcome the New Millennium and do a 19th century’s last picnic on the spring where we used to enjoy.

It is located some 6 kilometers away from the city proper. But it is known that distance does not matter to trekkers. They keep on coming back as long as they preserve the beauty and the natural features revered and enjoyed long before by our ancestors. Sprouting out of the toe of a hill and adorned by surrounding boulders, Busak-Busak spring transforms into an epitome of natural beauty and environmental attraction that draws visitors all year round.

The spring’s drinking water is as clear as crystal and anybody can feel its freshness that continuously flows out from the spring’s sharp, narrow mouth. This lively spring captures and stirs up the human senses so much so that a person is enticed into diving to the cool and refreshing water pool of this nature’s gift to mankind.
At the dawn of the New Millennium, one could significantly imagine how those local folks used to frolic with the spring; and how would they feel should they know about the spring’s changes. Or, just say: “Hello New Millennium” but “Goodbye Busak-Busak Spring”./*

MAMBUCAL SUMMER HEALTH RESORT

I greatly pride myself to declare that the Negros Occidental government-owned Mambucal Summer Health Resort is the country’s best place to greet the New Millennium.

It is strategically located atop of the high mountains in Barangay Minoyan, municipality of Murcia. To get part of the historic welcome, my family and other close friends will certainly journey up to the woodland on December 31, 1999.It will take a matter of one hour from Bacolod City through splendid zigzag roads up to the venue.

This 25-hectare resort is pollution-free millennium hang-out and renowned for its cool and ecologically-megged atmosphere. It is surrounded by forest trees and, wild plants and flowers. Its jungle hotel and, on-land and atree cottages offer modern amenities. A guest could even take a bath at its natural hot spa and body-dip at its three Olympic-size spring swimming pools. While you wait for the New World, you can also boil egg at its hot sulfuric pool (heat stems from adjacent Mt. Canlaon volcano). Egg boiling finishes as the millennium dawn begins.

The Mambucal is also famous for its magnificent seven spring waterfalls. At 10:00 PM, start trekking to the thick but safe forest at the first waterfalls you pass by, until you millenniumly reach the majestic seventh waterfalls on the high mountain peak as the New Millennium dawn appears. You, cleansed, fresh and confident to face the challenges ahead, will witness the phenomenal turn of another century. When the sun rises, sunlight likewise covers the entire resort, enough to feel the New Millennium’s spirit. Besides, on the seventh falls, you can see the aerial view of the entire Bacolod, as if you were on board a helicopter plying above the New World./*

Excerpts from the Speech I delivered as Graduation Guest Speaker

"Dear graduates, kindly open up your both hands and think what are holding at the moment. What do you see? Certainly, your hands hold nothing. There is nothing in your hands. But your life depends on how you will handle your hands. There is in your hands that you can not see but helps you succeed".

"My hands are obviously empty. But the whole world becomes fragile without these. The world is deserted without these key parts of our body. The world is nothing without my hands. The world is nothing without your hands".

" Dear graduates, think what your hands can do. Or, think what you can do to your hands. Can you text in your cellphone without your hands? Can you build houses and buildings without the help of the hands? Can we cook without the use of our hands?

" It’s our hands that tailored our clothes. It’s our hands that made our tricycles, our jeepneys and our bancas. It’s through our hands that catch the fish. And, it’s our hands that we use to swim".

"Everybody loves Spiderman. Do you think Spiderman could crawl on the web and climb up the trees and buildings without the aid of his hands? Without his powerful and magical hands, This Spiderman would no doubt be futile and eventually fall down to ground. Thus, we will lose a hero that will save the world from all dangers and evils".

"Again, dear graduates, may I request you all to rise up and close your eyes. Imagine the world without the hands. Now, tell me, what do you see or feel about? Do you still feel and benefit from the things we all enjoy now? The answers are your own. Please open your eyes and be seated".

" Have you seen the movie “Forest Gump”? The movie was Oscar’s Best Picture. It starred Tom Hanks. I understand that he is very much popular to all of us. In the movie, he keeps saying that “Life is a box of chocolate, you never know what you gonna get”. That in order to know what life awaits us ahead, we must know ourselves and work hard to achieve what we want".

" The world is becoming highly complicated. Our life has become an array of uncertain things. It has developed the options that give us a difficult time to choose from what we really want for ourselves. But if we know what we are and who we are, we can precisely decide on the right path for us".

" If we are gifted by God to have both hands, let’s use them wisely and intelligently. Our hands are physically empty but they carry our lives. Our lives rely on how we utilize our hands. Explore and discover. If we fail to marvel the good magic that lies in there, we deprive our selves to enjoy the wonders of life".

" I have my own hands. I have used them in accordance with what I have learned from schools, from people and from works. I am not a good writer but I could write. I am not a good editor but I could edit. If my hands could write and edit articles, maybe your hands can write and edit articles better than I could".

" If an engineer or an architect could design and build houses and buildings, maybe you can design and build better than they could. If your “nanay” or “tatay” could cook well, maybe you can cook better than they could. If your teachers could write on the blackboard, when you will grow up and become like them, you can pretty good write on the blackboard".

" This is not a question of what we are or who we are. This is a matter of believing in one self. Nothing sets us apart from the others. If we only believe in ourselves, we can surely climb up to the ladder of success. Do you believe that what you think or believe will come into reality? What mind thinks comes out. It’s like a dream come true".

This year’s theme “My Education: My Contribution to the Future” simply means “my hands, my educated hands that work, are my contributions to the future”.

" To the graduates: Believe in your dreams. believe in your minds. Believe in your hands".

The Tanduay’s Boracay Rum: the Pinoy’s New Rum

(One of the National Winners in the Boracay Rum Blog Contest 2011, a nationwide search for
best blog on Tanduay's new product. Contest duration: April 24, 2011 to May 27, 2011.
Date announced: June 10, 2011.)

Boracay Rum: the Philippines’ best, the people’s choice!

Hilariously, I am totally clueless on how that Tanduay’s new product becomes the country’s best, the people’s choice.

But the Tanduay’s latest innovation is still taking the 7,107 islands by storm where people are apparently celebrating the advent of the TRUE RUM. And it continues to draw the influx of Boracay Rum lovers and fanatics from across the archipelago. That this NEW RUM speaks about us, the Boracay landmarks and the “party-lover” Pinoy.

The Boracay Rum, a perfect blend of quality and style, is truly the Pinoy’s rum. That we “Pinoy” all love the rum. That we “Pinoy” all love the world-famous Boracay’s pristine waters and the powder-like white sands, where night life parallels to none.

Since that Boracay Rum is Pinoy’s rum, we Pinoy from all corners deserve to enjoy its good, relaxing taste. And that I take and promote that rum wherever I party with both friends and strangers alike. And feast till we all drop with the flavored rum of Cappuccino and Coconut.

It’s all party time, Philippines: I take the Boracay Rum all over the country! From the finest Boracay up to Vigan, Baguio, Tagaytay, Makati down to Palawan’s beaches, Iloilo, Bacolod, Cebu’s resorts, Zamboanga, General Santos, Cagayan De Oro and Davao. Not to mention the Dapitan’s Dakak Park and Beach Resort.

Let’s all flood the country with BORACAY RUM!
